Read a book, psych up for the season

Yo Swim, Bike, Run gang,

I find it helpful to surround myself with triathlon books and magazines, a bit of motivational reading and I’m ready to get out the door and hammer! The web is full of valuable info but it can’t compare to a fresh copy of “Lava” magazine in my hands. I love the full color way the action is captured… without the click of a mouse, and it looks good on the coffee table!

As for books, I just read Matt Fitzgerald’s book “Iron War”, a tome on the 1989 epic dual in Kona between Dave Scott and Mark Allen. I’ll give it a 7 out of 10 … I enjoyed the account of the race and loved being taken back to the birth of the sport and its early heroes. On the downside, I found the book to be choppy, jumping back and forth between the race and interviews and explanations from experts in the fields of Sociology and exercise physiology, trying to explain the extreme effort being put forth by Dave and Mark. My feeling is that Matt is reaching a bit to give us insight into what makes these incredible athletes tick, trying to add to his gripping account that of this amazing race, but taking a bit away from it by doing so. That said, I say read it, It’s one heck of a race!

Get Obsessed, and break free from … Balance!

in balanced life, balanced training, commitment to sport, passion, risk and reward, triathlon obsession

As you read through the multisport blogs you will see a lot about balancing triathlon in with the rest of life, making it all sound like everything can be nice and harmonious in our training, working and social time. If you think you can do all this balancing and compete at your full potential, I’m here to totally throw that pretty little world off its axis. I learned a long time ago that you can’t run fast by running slow and without passion, OK, obsession, you will just be spinning your wheels when it comes to performance excellence.

If the shoe fits

in picking running shoes, running fit, triathlon footwear, Triathlon shoes, zoot shoes

Out of all the equipment for training and racing nothing is more individual than the shoes we chose. For every person who loves a shoe there is someone that hates it, so much for science.  What this mean is, only you can chose your shoe and all the ads and hype won’t help much, it will take trying on a bunch of shoes. I’ve been selling running shoes for 25 years and my advice is to buy a shoe that fit’s and feels perfect right out of the box. Put them on, run a few yards and most times you will know instantly. If it feels stiff, it is, if the collar seems high and rubs you, it does, if the toe crease hits you wrong, it does.

Are you commited to be a true mulitsport athlete?

in like swimming, priorities, training, triathlon, true multisport athlete

Yo Tri Gang,

Many of us came to the 3 disciplines from one discipline and suffer from this dilemma (me included.) The runners run, the bikers bike, the swimmers swim. It’s hard to get our focus away from the sport we have had success at but we all know that the greatest gains we can make in triathlon will come from concentrating on weakness first… Dang.

One way to help this happen is to train specifically for a major event in your weak area like an open water swim (me), a bike

Randy Step – Train first, then read this!

Randy

Obsessed runner (12 sub 2:50 marathons), out of the closet triathlete and motivation specialist. Competed twice at Ironman Kona ... but only got in because his wife was the real deal! Randy’s best Kona finish, 11:47.

Currently trains for the Olympic distance... and is being coached by Christi the swimmer, hoping to place in his age group in a race next summer. Randy is looking for a weak field...

Favorite gear are his Zoot shoes, Zoot wetsuit and Blue 70 open water goggles.

Road Trip!

in travel

Triathlon travel training takes a bit of planning but you will be rewarded with memorable workouts and stories to tell. A couple memorable workouts for me this year follow. … Unless heading to a major race, I rent rather than haul the bike.
